Senior Executive

Managing Director:  Mr David Henderson BEng (Hons), MBA
David has more than 25 years experience in technology transfer, new venture establishment, marketing and the growth of technology-based businesses. Prior to joining UniQuest, he managed high- growth software companies in the USA and Australia,  consulted for a number of globally recognised companies with Booz Allen and McKinsey, and established an export centre for Queensland Information Technology and Communications firms, which supported a tripling of exports over three years. He was appointed Managing Director of UniQuest in 2001. The company has established some 70 start-ups and the UniQuest portfolio has raised over $450 million of investment and grants. Global sales of products that use technologies licensed by UniQuest now exceed $3 billion per year, and the company has grown to be one of the largest university technology transfer operations in the world. David has a Bachelor of Engineering from The University of Queensland and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has represented UniQuest on the Boards of a number of venture capital- backed companies, including two which moved to the USA, and Australia’s largest biotech IPO to date. 

 

Technology Commercialisationi General Manager (Physical Sciences; Transactions & Operations): Mr Andrew Davis BSc (Hons), MBA
Andrew is currently a General Manager of UniQuest's Technology Commercialisation division, overseeing commercialisation services provided to clients in the Physical Sciences and Engineering disciplines. He also manages the transactional activities and operational aspects of the division. He is a director on the Board of six technology venture companies, whose operations span engineering and manufacturing, medical imaging and vaccine development. Andrew has more than 20 years experience in technology, venture management and financing, and has previously held executive positions in a range of organisations, from an Australian technology start-up to a new venture division of Telstra with an annual turnover in excess of $200 million from the commercialisation of new technologies.

 

International Development General Manager: Mr Mel Dunn BTeach(FET), GradCertGMPA, MSCD, GAICD
Mel’s division engages with global aid agencies and other partners and practitioners to support developing nations’ to achieve their economic, social and community development objectives.  As General Manager he is responsible for financial and personnel management, and directs the activities and inputs of various multidisciplinary personnel for the provision of technical leadership, program management and research in the areas of Human Development and Sustainable Economies.  Mel’s career has spanned almost 20 years in the education, training and development sectors, which has included teaching, curriculum development, technical assistance and project management in Australia and overseas.  His understanding of socio-economic agendas is complemented by a strong business background and a comprehensive understanding of the Asia Pacific region and the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

 

Technology Commercialisation Group Manager (Queensland Partnerships): Dr Judy Halliday BSc (Hons), PhDi, GAICD
Judy has more than 18 years experience in the biotechnology field as both an academic and an industry professional.  After a career as an academic scientist she joined a biotech company, Alchemia, in 2001 as part of the senior management team.  During the six years that Judy was at the company it went from being a start-up to a public company after a successful listing on the Australian Stock Exchange.  Whilst at Alchemia Judy moved through several management roles, from drug discovery through to clinical development.  Judy joined UniQuest in April 2007. She is an inventor on granted patents and has been involved in multiple projects leading to the commercialisation of university technologies. She has management responsibility for the relationship between UniQuest and several of its partner institutions. She is a director of a number of Australian companies and a member of the investment committee of the early stage venture fund MRCF. In 2008 she was the recipient of a Woman in Technology Executive of the Year Award.

 

Chief Financial Officer: Mr Rob Hewitt, BA (Hons), CA
Maintaining UniQuest’s position as one of Australia’s largest and most successful university technology transfer companies, with group revenues exceeding A$50 million, adds another dimension to Rob's already multi-faceted career. Originally from the UK, where he studied to become a Chartered Accountant and completed a BA (Honours) in Modern Languages, Rob spent five years with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu as a Chartered Accountant and Audit Senior. He also honed his technical acumen whilst holding senior financial management positions in organisations operating in a range of industries, including textiles, building materials, cleantech, and private equity. As CFOi he draws on his experience in due diligence, acquisitions, integration and capital raising to produce the kind of robust financial intelligence that UniQuest needs to develop positive growth strategies, while ensuring the day-to-day financial processes provide smart and reliable support for that growth.

 

Consulting & Research General Manager: Mr Gary Heyden BAppSc, GDipMan, MBA
Gary's role is to successfully market UniQuest's consulting and research services to UQ as well as the clients in industry, government and business to develop and  implement plans for the Consulting and Research Section, to meet budget objectives and to ensure that customer requirements and expectations are met. With more than 24 years' industry experience and eleven years at UniQuest, Gary understands industry issues and their challenges. Additionally, with a Bachelor of Applied Science - applied chemistry, a Graduate Diploma in Management, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration, Gary is well-qualified to provide expert opinion when required. Gary's key areas of consulting expertise lie in occupational health and safety, chemical formulations and material failures, specifically metals, plastics, concrete and coatings.

 

Executive Manager, Commerialisation & Resources: Ms Jennifer Howe, BSc, GAICD
Jennifer has been a member of the executive team since joining UniQuest in 2002. She is responsible for driving a number of strategic initiatives related to UniQuest’s business growth, and for developing and managing the human resources and capabilities of the company. Her role includes managing stakeholder relationships and identifying new opportunities for project funding sources from both the private and public sectors. Jennifer is a science graduate of ANU and has more than 20 years' commercial experience. Her background is in the high technology industry in client relationship management, sales team management, general operations, human resources and staff management. Prior to joining UniQuest, Jennifer worked for IBM for ten years, primarily in emerging markets, living and working in Eastern Europe.

 

Technology Commercialisation Group Manager (Southern Partnerships): Mr David Israel BA
David has been with UniQuest since 2001. He has a diverse background across higher education, business and technology.  During the late 1980s, David was involved in managing major institutional strategic change in the higher education sector, helping drive efficiencies from organisational restructuring and changes to the management and governance of universities.  He then worked in commercialisation and the internationalisation of education as Director of Continuing Education at the University of Adelaide.  At UniQuest, David has worked closely with researchers licensing technologies and establishing a number of start-up companies, including ActiveTorque Pty Ltd, Ausonex Pty Ltd, and Imprezzeo Pty Ltd.  He has raised venture, strategic and angel investment and guided commercial strategy on a significant number of deals.  He is responsible for UniQuest’s relationships with public research partners outside Queensland.  

 

Technology Commercialisation Group Manager (Business, Arts, Social Sciences): Mr Joe McLean BBus (Hons), Dip Teach, GAICD
Joe was appointed Group Manager, Social Sciences in 2008 having been a Manager, Innovationi and Commercial Development at UniQuest since 2002.  Prior to joining UniQuest he worked in a variety of roles in the Queensland Government and as a consultant to The University of Queensland on information technology management and research.  Since joining UniQuest he has negotiated licensing arrangements for a variety of projects emanating from the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at The University of Queensland and is a Director of UniQuest software company, Leximancer Pty Ltd.  He also manages the licence for the Triple P Positive Parenting Program and Latch On, a literacy program for young adults with intellectual disabilities which has been licensed to Endeavour Foundation in Australia and two organisations in Canada. Joe’s responsibilities also include UQ’s faculties of Arts and Business, Economics, law and Tourism.

 

Technology Commercialisation General Manager (Life Sciences): Dr Dean Moss BSc, MPhil, PhD, GAICD
Dean Moss has over 25 years’ experience in science, academia, business, management and commercialisation in Australia, USA and the UK.  He has been managing director or senior business development executive of several health and biotech companies worldwide, including Agen Biomedical, Launch Diagnostics, AMRAD ICT, AMRAD Biotech, and United Drug. He established his own start-up business in the UK, York Medical Technologies. Prior to moving into the commercial world, Dean was principal R&D scientist at Agen Biomedical.  He also worked as an NH&MRC research scientist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the Royal Brisbane Hospital and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. He is a recipient of the Campion-Ma-Playoust Memorial Award for Medical Research. Dean is a board member of several Australian companies and a member of the investment committee of the pre-seed venture funds Uniseed, the Medical Research Commercialisation Fund and the New Zealand Government’s KiwiNet.  He has contributed to raising over $50m in venture capital investment.

 

 

Corporate Development Manager: Ms Leanne Wyvill, BA (Hons), Grad.Dip. (Comm), ATCL
Leanne's brand management, public relations, event management and marketing experience spans more than 20 years, working for local government, professional services, arts and health organisations, education, and other not-for-profit clients. Prior to joining UniQuest in September 2007 Leanne was an active member of the Ipswich business community, one of the fastest commercial and social growth regions in Queensland. Leanne's involvement with Mater Health Services and her teaching roles at Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology stimulated her interest in science, engineering and technology. Leanne completed her Honours at the University of NSW and her Grad.Dip (with Distinction) at Queensland University of Technology. As UniQuest's Corporate Development Manager Leanne is responsible for promoting the company's brand, reputation, capabilities and achievements as well as enhancing relationships with UniQuest's key clients and collaboration partners.
