Sanitary  and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards are applied to protect against the risks related to food safety, animal health and plant protection, particularly for goods that are internationally traded.

Biosecurity refers to the measures taken by governments to prevent or manage the risks posed by pests and diseases to their economy, environment and human health.

Both effective SPS standards and biosecurity systems improve a nation's ability to trade internationally (export) and to manage the risks presented by trade (import).
