Supporting community programs in Papua New Guinea

Project:

Protection Review of the Anglican Church Programs in PNG

Countries:

Papua New Guinea

Client:

Anglican Board of Mission - Australia

Contract Period:

July 2010 - December 2010

A protection approach seeks to improve safety, wellbeing and dignity for all, with a particular focus on meeting the needs and promoting the rights of those most vulnerable to harm or most excluded from access to basic services. It includes activities aimed at obtaining full respect for the rights of the individual in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the relevant bodies of law, such as human rights law, humanitarian law and refugee law.

This project aimed to assess the existing protection capacity of the Anglican Church of PNGi; analyse the organisation’s understanding of, and approach to, protection; identify protection risks arising from, or associated with, program delivery and affecting workers and/or beneficiaries; and highlight areas of priority attention for protection intervention and capacity building.

The project was undertaken using various data collection methodologies including formal questionnaires, discussion groups, participant observation and interviews both with office-based staff and field personnel as well as community members and stakeholders. The review also strengthened communication channels between community field workers and office staff and volunteers and helped to ensure that ACPNG programs reflected community concerns and issues.
