Institutional Strengthening Project for FPDA

Improving rural livelihoods in Papua New Guinea

Project:

Institutional Strengthening Project for Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA)

Countries:

Papua New Guinea

Client:

New Zealand Agency for International Development

Contract Period:

2007 - 2011

The project has aimed to improve rural livelihoods through development of PNG’s fruit and vegetable industry. The project has deepened FPDA’s understanding of the socio-economic context in which it operates, through the completion of various contextual studies and surveys covering:

• household income and expenditure of fresh produce farmers;
• potential of key production areas;
•  origin of produce entering major markets;
• the opportunities for the fresh produce sector through the LNG project.

These studies have been widely circulated and cited by development professionals in PNG, and have shown to hold significant value for planning and policy development within the region. UniQuest was responsible for the implementation of the project and provided a full suite of specialist advisory services. Significant inputs included agricultural research and development, horticultural advice and training, technical design of the project, monitoring, communication and evaluation activities.
