Professor Matt Sanders and his colleagues from the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland are continuing to develop the Triple P system of interventions to support parents and families. The Triple P Positive Parenting Program is a 20-year extension of Professor Sanders’ research for his PhDi on the value of good parenting techniques and their impact on childhood social development and health outcomes.
From 1992 the multi-level system of training, publications and media campaigns was developed within the Parenting and Family Support Centre, but by 2000 it became clear that the University did not have the capacity to support the volume of outputs required to market and grow the program.
In 2001 the Triple P publishing and distribution rights were licensed to an established Queensland-based company, Families International Publishing Pty Ltd. Soon afterwards, the company changed its name to Triple P International Pty Ltd and devoted its efforts to marketing the Triple P Program. Triple P International remains the exclusive licensee of the program and has experienced significant growth in the past few years. It now employs 80+ staff and earns 90 per cent of its revenue overseas.
The Triple P program is currently available in 18 languages for families in 23 countries, and more than 60,000 professionals around the world have been trained to deliver the program for the benefit of seven million children. More than 120 evaluation studies in multiple countries continue to enrich the research on which the program is based. The program includes courses on parenting children of all ages from babies to teenagers, and is expanding to include modules addressing such issues as divorce and childhood obesity.
