Syngas Micro-reactor - hollow ceramic fibre technology

The reforming of ‘syngas’, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, from natural gas is the first step in converting natural gas into various products. Syngas is the starting point for the production of methanol, syncrude (e.g. clean diesel, jet fuel) and hydrogen. Significant capital and operating costs are associated with the oxygen separation and reforming plant.

Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed a micro-reactor that combines oxygen separation and the reforming of syngas using high permeability hollow fibre oxygen separation membranes and a unique catalyst.
