Beginning as a student project, the ‘Safer By Design’ bin has become one of the first innovations from the UTSⁱ-based Designing Out Crime (DOC) initiative sponsored by the NSW Ministry of Justice and Attorney General (DJAG) to be advanced to prototype production, and now has a patent pending and potential for overseas licensing.

The Centre was commissioned to design a bin that could be installed permanently in public spaces, have features to deter use of them for inappropriate means, and be easily and quickly checked for dangerous contents.The result is a front-loading, tamper-proof, semi-transparent modular bin that can be wall-mounted securely and x-rayed if required without being dismantled.
