Created by University of Tasmania PhDi student Christina Henri, Roses from the Heart® began as a memorial art installation based on the iconic colonial bonnet which pays tribute to convict women’s social and economic contribution to the country that became their home, Australia. Each Roses from the Heart bonnet recreates a convict woman’s story, forming a database as the core commercial product.
The next phase of the project will be a digital version: an ‘access anywhere’ virtual reality tour of Australia’s female convict history. Using smart smart-phone and tablet platforms, the project involves developing the back-end database, creating iPhone and iPad applications (App), and establishing iTunes accessibility and affordability.
The digital version also aims to link Roses from the Heart data and other archival records.
