Red Gold

Using sustainable and controllable tank-based biomass aquaculture, James Cook University researchers have developed technology to optimise the commercial potential of Asparagopsis taxiformis, otherwise known as "Red Gold".  Halogenated metabolites enable extracts from the seaweed to reveal rich antibacterial and antifungal properties - key ingredients in many cosmetics products. Natural products are also released into the surrounding water, creating the additional possibility for "green therapy" for integrated aquaculture systems to combat fish bacterial diseases.

Red Gold biomass could be sold raw, dry, or as an extract for the cosmetics industry. A related species is currently being used in this industry but the challenges of growing the seaweed have, to date, limited its adoption.  The non-EU cosmetics market is estimated to be worht 2.4 billion Euro, with 2.4 billion Euro improted by EU countries each year.
