The Mater Medical Research Institute is developing an RT-PCR-based blood assay, which will be able to detect ovarian cancer with high sensitivity and specificity, and will be suitable for use in public health screening. Currently, no early-detection test exists and diagnosis is difficult. Ovarian cancer typically remains undiagnosed until late-stage disease has developed, by which time the prognosis for patients is poor.
