Neurotide - novel treatments for neuropathic pain

Neurotide Pty Ltd was established by UniQuest to commercialise neuropathic pain innovations originating from the research of Professor Istvan Toth and Dr Joanne Blanchfield at The University of Queensland.

More than 1.5 million people suffering from neuropathic pain in the USi, Europe and Japan, with the US being the largest market. No single non-opioid neuropathic pain drug currently available provides relief to more than 50% of patients.

The peptide endomorphin-1 has been shown to be effective in relieving neuropathic pain in rat models when injected directly into the central nervous system. However, there are significant limitations associated with using the native endomorphine-1 as a  therapeutic.

Neurotide has synthesised endomorphin-1 analogues to modify the physical properties of endomorphin-1, making it more suitable as a pain-relieving drug, e.g. improve membrane permeability, plasma stability and receptor binding, achieving a treatment that relieves pain equal to opioids without the problems of side effects and tolerance.
