Neuroprotective Agent

With an increasing aging population, the demand for the treatment of stroke and neurodegenerative disorders is expected to increase over the next 20 years. University of Queesland researchers have identified and characterised a section of a membrane receptor in neurons which is responsible for signalling neuronal cell death.  Inhibiting this "death" region can prevent cells from beginning the processes that lead to cell death and ultimately severe disease - the FC29 peptide.  This peptide represents a novel treatment for halting neuronal cell death in diseases associated with neurodegeneration.  It could be given to patients who have recently suffered from stroke, or suffer from Alzheimers, Parkinson's or Motor Neurone Disease to prevent further degradation of their neuronal systems.
