Melioidosis, an emerging tropical disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Underlying co-morbidities,particularly diabetes, increase the risk of infection with B.pseudomallei. An aging population, increased incidence of diabetes and populations moving to the tropics pose a significant threat of increased Melioidosis-related morbidity and mortality.
James Cook University researchers have identified potential biomarkers to guide the development of a rapid immunoassay which may aid diagnosis, assess immune status, and plan treatment strategies for patients with Melioidosis and those exposed to B.pseudomallei.
