LabStar, a web-based software program developed by researchers at the University of Technology, Sydney, brings together a unique knowledge base for scientists by scientists. Its social networking framework is intuitive and easy to use, promoting information sharing on current best methods for conducting laboratory research. Currently, no consistent collection of such knowledge in the science professions exists. LabStar features a Digital Mentor to teach novice users best methodology; an Experiment Planner to help with work flow analysis and planning; a Digital Notebook to record experiments; and Knowledgebase - a compendium of information. Academic scientists, researchers in the corporate science sector, as well as teachers in secondary schools and undergraduate courses would find LabStar useful.
