Evengold

Developed by researchers at the University of Technology Sydney, the Evengold bioreactor addresses the current limitations on biofuel production from microalgae. By improving the distribution of even light throughout the water column, the risk of damage to cells at the surface is reduced, allowing cells at depth to photosynthesise with high efficiency. The technology involves a low-cost, scalable bioreactor design from which growth yields are estimated to be at least 4X higher than current methods for the same nutrient conditions. Evengold includes integrated designs for automated collection of secreted biofuels, to enhance the extraction process. With lack of cost efficiency being the main limitation to the development of algae biofuels, Evengold could contribute to making algae-based biofuels economically viable.   While Evengold technology has been developed primarily for the algal growth in biofuel production, other industries involving algal production may find this technology attractive, e.g. Omega 3 or biopolymer products.
