DeFragnostic

Dientamoeba fragilis is a parasite that has emerged as a significant cause of diarrhoea, abdominal pain and looseness of stools in Australia and other places around the world.  Treatment by drugs is achievable, resulting in improvement of clinical signs as well as elimination of the parasite. Definitive diagnosis is therefore the main key to the successful control of D. fragilis. Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney and St Vincent's Hospital are the first to sequence a protein from D. fragilis and are developing a rapid diagnostic which may be suitable for integration into a panel of tests.
