Researchers at the Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRIi) have demonstrated in vitro that co-administration of ascorbic acid and rosiglitazone causes a synergistic increase in the secretion of high molecular weight adiponectin – a key determinant of plasma insulin action. This suggests that an improved efficacy TZD formulation may be possible through co-formulation with ascorbic acid, with the potential to increase the glucose-lowering effects of TZD therapy. A simple reformulation based on this discovery may result in a profound increase in insulin sensitising efficacy.
