University of Queensland researchers have developed a new chilled dessert product to offer a competitive choice to consumers wanting a flavorsome, non-dairy chilled snack. Yogurts and dairy desserts account for 17% of the $9.2 billion wholesale value of the dairy industry in Australia. Dairy snacks have a monopoly in the chilled supermarket category. While short shelf life fruit drinks dominate flavored dairy drinks, there are no chilled fruit desserts available in supermarkets. This is an opportunity for a chilled, fruit based, non-dairy snack to compete with yoghurt and dairy desserts in this high value and high turnover retail category.
