Dr Merritt is an expert in the genetics and developmental biology of insects.  He is developing new and innovative ways of controlling insects as well as understanding how they affect plants and people.

He is also researching the physiology and ecology of glow-worms in Australia and New Zealand (major tourist attractions at some cave and rainforest sites). He has provided expert opinions for major fast food companies and quoted on insect food contamination. Dr Merritt has also carried out industry-funded research in areas of applied insect biology, including developing insect traps and the biological control of pests.
