2011 Trailblazer UOW Award Winners

2011 University of Wollongong Results

Open Winner ($3,000)
Ms Belinda Gibbons-Parrish & Professor Trevor Spedding (SINET) – Interactive Dynamic Learning Environment (IDLE)
IDLE is a web based simulated interactive dynamic learning environment in which multidisciplinary teams compete across a performance matrix which includes profit, environmental impact, sustainability, social responsibility, quality of service and ethical performance. IDLE focuses specifically on broadening the understanding of the interrelationship between corporation and society by anchoring Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability in the strategy and activities that arise during the running of an enterprise.

Open Runner-Up ($1,000)
Professor Aditya Ghose (Infomatics) - UNNOTI
Professor Aditya’s computer-based UNNOTI toolkit uses the rigour of formal software engineering methods to obtain better-designed and more efficient rural services (e.g. seed/fertilizer supply), while supporting continual monitoring and improvement.  The project aims to increase agricultural production and improve the quality of life in impoverished farming communities.

 Open Highly Commended ($500)
Ms Yasmina Probst (Smart Foods Centre)eFood Traka for Better Health Management
eFood Traka aims to streamline the process of recording the foods you eat and link it directly to feedback on the amount of calories, fat and carbohydrates eaten. It could also feed directly to a dietitian to help manage weight or chronic diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Student Winner ($3,000)
Ms Danielle Skropeta, Mr Consulato Cara (School of Chemistry) – Diagnostic Approaches Targeting Cancer's Sweet Spot
Accurate diagnosis and early detection are key to the survival of those living with cancer. Through the use of sugars as modulators, we aim to design tailored diagnostic agents that demonstrate selectivity for specific tumour types. As a result, higher resolution imaging may lead to greater accuracy during tumour diagnosis.

Student Runner-Up ($1,000)
Mr Jack Yang & Mr Zhenxin Feng (Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Research Institute) – Time-sensitive Map for Intelligent Transportation
GoCo aims to benefit people worldwide by providing highly scalable solutions for intelligent transportation. The key desired outcome is a time-sensitive map integrated with street-level view, traffic update and location-based search without satellite support. The technique could also be applied outside of transportation systems, such as environmental surveillance and social networking.

Student Highly Commended ($500)
Mr Marco Leong & Dr Luke McAven, Dr Khin Win (Infomatics) – Auto Calibration for Colour Defectiveness
This project aims to enhance world perceptions for a significant proportion of the world’s population.  We seek to provide a high resolution standard for measuring the severity of colour vision defectiveness and develop a novel mechanism to compensate appropriately.

Pitching Excellence ($1,000)
Mr Christopher Anderson (Creative Arts) – Sustainable Shredding: A Biodegradable Surfboard Foam
High performance surfboards are currently made using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) which is a non-renewable petrochemical foam. I aim to make surfboards more sustainable through the use of a new material that is structurally superior to EPS and more environmentally friendly.
